If your student has not told you already, our class has worked very hard each day to earn "Preferred Activity Time" at the end of each week. Starting at the beginning of the week, each class starts with 15 minutes of PAT. Throughout the week, the classes can earn or lose minutes based on their effort or conduct. On the last day of the week, the students get to participate in a fun activity for the length of time they have earned. Students who have not finished their homework at an 80% level, though, use this time to do so before taking the quiz during the second half of class.
This week, I am proud to say that my 7th hour class earned the most PAT with 19 minutes earned total. In a close second are my 2nd and 4th hour classes, each with 18 minutes. All classes will play common core-aligned math games for the length of time they have earned today during the first half of class. Way to go 7th hour students!!
Because this is a short week with no school on Friday for the students, we will move up our weekly quiz one day. Students will be given their Ticket to Test on Tuesday, August 26 rather than Wednesday to still allow them two days to complete it. The weekly quiz will be on Thursday this week rather than on Friday. Remember we have no school on Monday for Labor Day, so we will continue exploring multiplication and division of fractions on Tuesday next week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Wednesday and Thursday will center on practicing reciprocals of both proper fractions and mixed numbers. Students can expect some kind of review activity on Thursday over this week's content. The weekly quiz on Friday will cover improper fractions, mixed numbers, and reciprocals; these are all 2.0 skills for Chapters 5 & 6. The Ticket to Test will be handed out Wednesday and will be due Friday as discussed in the class syllabus. There are video examples of these 2.0 skills under the Resources tab for more explanation or practice.
Looking ahead at next week, we will dive right into the basic (2.0) skills of Multiplying and Dividing fractions. We will be covering improper fractions, mixed numbers, and reciprocals during the week next week. Students can expect their first Ticket to Test as homework on Wednesday (due Friday), and their first weekly quiz on Friday. Remember, this Ticket to Test must be completed with 8 out of 10 correct in order to take the weekly quiz.
Please be sure that you have access to PowerSchool in order to see my classroom gradebook throughout the school year. This is the best way to stay up to date with how your student is performing in math class and where there grade currently stands. If you do not have access to PowerSchool, please contact Tena Stoy in our front office to get help with your login.
**IMPORTANT** Please disregard the due dates in the PowerSchool gradebook. Because of the continuous nature of our curriculum and assessment process, the only due dates are that Tickets to Test are due on Fridays. I am using the dates in the gradebook solely to sort the assignments into the correct order and make them easier to display
Thank you so much to all the parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, and, of course, the students who came to Open House this evening. It was great to meet everyone and see some familiar faces. I am truly looking forward to getting this year started and helping all of my students achieve their full potential. Parents, I believe that a school partnership between you and I can help support this high student achievement; this being said, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
As I mentioned tonight, this website is the best way to stay updated about what is going on in math class, so be sure to check back on this page often. Let's make this a great year!!
Each week a "Ticket to Test" will be assigned on Wednesday and will be due on Friday. Each Friday will be a weekly quiz over the week's material.
