We are starting a statistics project in math class. Working with a partner, students will design their own statistics project centered around a topic of their choice. Throughout the project students will create multiple graphs and share their learning with their classmates. Numerous resources are available to support this project here.

In class today, we learned about how to solve one-step equations. Some of the students asked that I make the presentation permanently available for them to study, so here it is! Students may need to enter their Google log-in to view the Google Slides.

Students will learn about solving one-step equations with variables, as well as the basic 2.0 skills associated with this objective.
Students will have homework through Digits that is due Friday, March 27. This can be completed on their iPad or a computer, as long as they have an internet connection. We will continue to take our weekly quizzes on Fridays. We are three weeks into the new semester, and two weeks into the 1:1 iPad initiative. This means we are ready to get rolling using these new educational tools to continue learning about integers and rational numbers. This week students will be continuing some of the basics, including an introduction to graphing on the coordinate plane. There is no homework this week as I work on getting acclimated to homework with the iPads, but look for homework beginning next week. There will be a quiz on Friday over the content we have learned so far.
Some of you may have noticed there is a new page on my classroom website. The "In Class" page is simply a location for me to post links students will need during class that day. The information on this page will change often and pertains primarily to in class work and activities. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. This is an exciting week for the 6th grade students with iPad deployment happening today! Students will be receiving their iPads in Social Studies today if their Apple ID has been set up. Students will be allowed to take their iPad home starting Thursday, January 15 if their insurance has been paid for.
Starting Tuesday, the iPads will be regularly used in math class. We will spend time this week covering expectations and procedures for properly using them in class. Each student will set up various apps and links on their iPads for use in class. The apps we will be using in math class are:
They will also create links to the following websites:
At home, if you would like your student to practice their math skills on their iPad, here are some options:
I will continue to post learning opportunities and ways the students can practice their skills here on the classroom website, so check back often. Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a terrific Christmas Break! This week we will be reviewing content that we learned during the first semester of math class. There is no homework this week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
It's finally here! The final week before a much-deserved two weeks off from school. Before I go too far into this post, I just want to say how proud I am of all the hard work the students have done this semester. I am truly blessed to teacher such a great group of students, and I look forward to continuing to teach them when we return in January.
This week, we will be tying up a few loose ends with our Rates/Ratio Reasoning unit. The students will do a review lesson and final quiz today to get one more shot at passing some of the more challenging objectives in this chapter. Tomorrow (Tuesday), I have a special video that I will be sharing with the students that showcases their work from this semester. Students will also take the performance task for this last unit for a chance at the 3.5 and 4.0 levels. Wednesday, students will complete a holiday themed webquest activity in the computer lab. Thursday, students will take a summative assessment over all the objectives we have covered this semester. This will help me check for retention on these skills over the last few months. Finally, on Friday, students have a busy half-day of assemblies and end of semester activities. There is no homework this week due to the end of the semester. Have a wonderful holiday break! I look forward to hitting the ground running when we return next month! We are in the final two weeks of the semester now, and that means we are wrapping up our last unit for this half of the school year. Students will be learning about many ways to apply rates and proportions to real-world problems. We will have our final quiz over this material on Friday, so there will be homework assigned on Wednesday in order to take this quiz. The performance task over this chapter will be given either Monday or Tuesday next week.
Students will get homework on Wednesday, December 3, which must be completed and turned in by Thursday, December 4 in order to take the quiz. I will be away from school on Friday to attend a departmental site visit at another middle school in our region, so students will have their quiz Thursday instead of Friday.
This is going to be a short post to match the short week we are in. Students will be taking the second round of Acuity testing today and tomorrow. There is no homework or quiz this week. Have a great Thanksgiving!
